Being and Thought is run by Joe Speed, who is responsible for the personal data described here. You can reach me about anything on this page at joespeed@beingandthought.com.

The newsletter

If you subscribe, I keep your email address so that I can tell you about new essays. I rely on your consent to do this. The address is stored with Supabase and the emails are sent through Resend. I keep it until you unsubscribe, which you can do from the link in the emails, and which deletes your address.

Analytics

This site uses Google Analytics to show me which pages are read and roughly where readers come from. Google sets cookies to do this and collects details such as the pages you visit, your device and your approximate location.

Running the site

The site is hosted by Vercel, which handles the technical details that any web request involves, such as your IP address. Icons are loaded from Cloudflare. Essays and the music page can include Spotify players, and Spotify may collect data and set its own cookies when they load. Links to other sites, such as Buy Me a Coffee and Substack, are covered by those sites' own policies.

Saved on your device

Your browser remembers your light or dark theme and your place in an essay. These stay on your device and are not sent to me.

Emailing me

If you email me, I keep your message and address for as long as I need them to reply and for my own records.

Who else sees your data

I do not sell your data or use it for advertising, and I only share it with the services named above. Some of them may process data outside the UK.

Your rights

You can ask me for a copy of your data, or ask me to correct or delete it. You can also object to how I use it or withdraw your consent at any time. If you are unhappy with how I have handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.
